September 1st–really?

Posted on September 2, 2011 by deniseSeptember 2, 2011

I’m sad.  No, I mean like really sad.  All year I look forward to summer (Check out this post to see what I’m talking about) and now it’s over.  Oh, I know, it’s still warm during the day, and crisp and lovely in the evening.  but did YOU notice what time it got dark last night?  See what I mean? All you fall lovers, shush up.  I think it’s pretty, too.  But it means winter is headed our way.  All you winter lovers, you skiers, you crazy “I … Continue reading →

Something is wrong…

Posted on August 3, 2011 by deniseAugust 3, 2011

It started out as a little scratchiness in the throat.  A little hru-umph clearing, a few swallows of water, and then it hit me.  I’m getting a summer cold.  NO WAY! Sure enough, by 7 PM I was having trouble swallowing, my nose was starting to run, and I felt, well, foggy and dull. How could this be?  I was up early this morning enjoying coffee on the deck, I had a lovely 35-minute bike ride before 8 a.m., and I had both breakfast AND lunch out! … Continue reading →

Musical Bookkeepers

Posted on May 18, 2011 by deniseMay 18, 2011

Did you ever lose your bookkeeper? I don’t mean, did they get lost in the file room or something–but did you ever suddenly NOT have the bookkeeper who was the one person who knew how to do your books, and suddenly you feel like you’re naked and alone in a confusing and harsh world? OK, that’s an overstatement.  But it’s a scary feeling:  What bills are due?  How do I print a check?  What’s the balance in our account?  How do we get payroll called in?  Don’t … Continue reading →

It’s o-o-o-over!

Posted on April 21, 2011 by deniseApril 21, 2011

So either you got your taxes done, you’re waiting for your refund (oh please don’t tell me you had to pay….) and you’re merrily on your way, OR You filed an extension (again) and are back to procrastinating mode.  Isn’t it fun?  At least you’re predictable, right?  Little known fact:  Many, many accountants are also on extension.  Does that make you feel any better?  Of course, they actually have a valid reason; they were so busy filing every one else’s that they put their own on the … Continue reading →

What is a P&L Statement (and why do you care?)

Posted on April 10, 2011 by deniseApril 10, 2011

What is a Profit and Loss Statement? (and why do you care?) You get income. That’s good. You have expenses. That’s life. The object of the game is that your income is greater than your expenses. You already knew that. The question is are you winning the game? And how do you know? If you’re like most overworked business owners, you gauge it by whether there’s any money left at the end of the month. Or if you haven’t had any credit cards cancelled lately. Here’s another … Continue reading →

Outsourcing–a good idea?

Posted on April 9, 2011 by deniseApril 9, 2011

It’s a vexing question for small-business owners, especially those accustomed to self-reliance. Even though you might think of it as an added expense, outsourcing can increase productivity, making the cost worth it. More and more entrepreneurs are scrutinizing their internal operations, with an eye toward outsourcing. In the process, they’re discovering that outsourcing can be a viable option for many of the non-core aspects of their businesses.  To identify opportunities for your company, start by answering these questions: What processes could be performed more efficiently or cost-effectively? … Continue reading →

IT’S ALMOST APRIL 15… For all us “numbers people” that means the phones will calm down and we will be allowed to get reacquainted with our families. For all you procrastinators, that means you have 6 more months to avoid getting your stuff together before you panic again. Go ahead, enjoy it. But while you are, maybe, just maybe, consider how you might break this crazy cycle. Like maybe by hiring a bookkeeper once and for all? C’mon, give it some thought. You know you want to. … Continue reading →
