April 2010

Posted on April 10, 2010 by deniseApril 10, 2010

OK, it’s 90 degrees out there, and it’s only the beginning of April. This is when I’m happy that I own my own business. I set my alarm to get up early this morning, was at my desk before 8, and I will escape early this afternoon to enjoy some sunshine. Do you own your own business? Do you have that kind of freedom, too? If you are still trying to get your stuff to the accountant for your tax return, you may be stuck inside with all … Continue reading →

March 2010

Posted on March 10, 2010 by deniseMarch 10, 2010

It’s buy your bookkeeper lunch week Seriously, do you know how hard we’re working about now? Clients are crying to us because they just gave us their stuff, and their accountants are yelling at us that they’re trying to get their tax returns done… We’re people, too, and lunch would be nice. But you’ll have to send it in, because we just don’t have time to stop right now. In fact, now that I’m thinking about it, how about lunch in July? That is, after all, my … Continue reading →

February 2010

Posted on February 10, 2010 by deniseFebruary 10, 2010

WOW…It’s “tax time.” Did you get your return done yet? Is there any chance you’ll get it done on time this year? If not, take heart that you’re not alone–and that there is an answer. If this is a recurring theme with you, ask your accountant to file an extension one more time and then give us a call. We’ll get you caught up, you can file, and then you can NEVER GO THROUGH THAT AGAIN. Or, you can just keep going through this again and again. … Continue reading →

December 2009

Posted on December 10, 2009 by deniseDecember 10, 2009

It’s COMING….”The Holidays.” You business owners probably define that as the two-month period of the year where you’re supposed to do everything you usually do, PLUS 10,000 other things (especially if you’re a woman–sorry men).  If you’re like most Americans, the way you’ll handle that is by getting less sleep. After all, there are a whole bunch of spare hours free for the taking every day (night) to cram all that stuff into. DON’T DO IT! Besides the fact that you’ll get cranky and no one will … Continue reading →

November 2009

Posted on November 10, 2009 by deniseNovember 10, 2009

Where does most of your business come from? Did you know that you can code your customers in QuickBooks so that you know who came from the yellow pages, who found you on the internet, who was a referral from that networking group you attend, etc? Then you can run reports using those codes as markers, and see where you should be doing your marketing–what’s working and what’s not. I get a lot of new clients from my website. Wanna be one? And if you want to … Continue reading →

October 2009

Posted on October 10, 2009 by deniseOctober 10, 2009

Did you ever just get bombarded by “stuff?”In the last month, my dear old dog died (16-1/2 years, we had a good run), I traveled to Florida to visit my mother post-heart attack, I attended a convention in Tennessee, I got a new puppy, I began searching for new housing marketo alternative for Mom in NJ, and I interviewed 10 people for a bookkeeping job. It happens –life runs us over when we’re not looking, and before you know it, a month or two have gone by … Continue reading →

September 2009

Posted on September 10, 2009 by deniseSeptember 10, 2009

It’s September–what grade are you going in to? It’s been a lot of years since I last went back to school in September, but whenever I turn that calendar page over, I get that excited/anticipatory feeling in my stomach again. Going back to school also always meant new, unscribbled-on notebooks and a fresh chance to get all “A’s.” So while it’s traditional to have that “clean slate” feeling on January 1, I have always had it at the beginning of every September. What about you? Do your … Continue reading →

August, 2009

Posted on August 10, 2009 by deniseAugust 10, 2009

It probably takes having a good bookkeeper to figure out which is more economical — having a good bookkeeper or doing your books yourself Maybe that’s why some people have to “do it their way” for so long before they finally decide to hire a bookkeeper. And at that point, they have no way to measure what the delay has cost them, they only know what the new bookkeeper costs. I think I’ll invent a strap-on, time-squandered-o-meter for entepreneurs considering doing their own books. Make ’em wear … Continue reading →

July 2009

Posted on July 10, 2009 by deniseJuly 10, 2009

I can’t believe it’s the last day of July. July is my very favorite month (my birthday is in July), but also because I liive in NJ, and it’s green, and beach time and no school, and there’s still more summer ahead, so I’m always sad when August is upon us. You can imagine my sorrow when it’s September, and by October the only thing that keeps me from being really, really sad is all the pretty colors. November would have me suicidal except that it’s time … Continue reading →

June 2009

Posted on June 10, 2009 by deniseJune 10, 2009

We’re half way through the year, already! At this point you should be able to run reports and see how your business is measuring up. I like to compare the first 6 months to the last 6 months, and then I compare Jan-June of this year to Jan-June of last year. Whether you’re doing better, the same, or worse, spend the time to analyze your numbers and figure out how to do better. I did this for YOUR BOOKKEEPER yesterday, and I was amazed at the hidden … Continue reading →
